The 'mind hack' I learnt at the playground

The 'mind hack' I learnt at the playground

The trouble with encouraging your kids to believe they can do anything is you can find yourself being equally encouraged!

I’ve never had a liking for those big tunnel slides. Such a long tunnel with so little space I find the thought of - claustrophobic.

But James took to one like a duck to water recently on our Sunny Coast holiday. Navigating the climb all the way to the top and then down he came. On repeat. He loved it! And hadn’t been on one anything close to that size before…

I just ran 30km!

I just ran 30km!

Hadn’t planned to run that far… but I did!

And from my current non-existent running base it was a pretty gutsy effort I must say 😊 💪

I wanted to share how it unfolded because I learnt so much and was reminded of a lot of things I ‘knew’ but could do with the reminder of. And for anyone with a marathon or big run coming up, maybe this will help. It’s a big one so sit back 🍿…

The Secret to Life and to Running? Here's one answer worth considering...

After her Marathon win at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games recently Jess Trengove spoke of how she ‘gets the most out of herself when she’s thinking one k at a time’.

Lindsay Flanagan said something similar after her win at the Gold Coast Marathon (in a new course record of 2:24!) - her main goal was to ‘stay present the whole race and take it one mile at a time’ - something she says to have struggled with in the past.

There’s a lot to be said for both of these performances and wonderful athletes…

When it gets tough, and it will, know you've got what it takes, because you do

When it gets tough, and it will, know you've got what it takes, because you do

I came up with this quote a few years ago to help me get through my last Marathon.

Having only done 4 weeks training for it, I anticipated I’d need it… and I did!

I pulled it out of the Inspiration Kit recently for the Melbourne Marathoners, and wanted to share it here, because it goes for any kind of goal and life itself.

One of the finest examples of attitude I've ever seen - Carol Cooke AM

I wanted to shine a spotlight on a wonderful friend of mine.

Who also just happens to be a 3 x Gold medal Paralympian and 9 x World Champion in Cycling, among many other medals and accolades. Oh, and she has MS too!

Carol is a remarkable human being. And as I write this, she is lying in a hospital bed in Tokyo, waiting for her punctured lung to heal before she can return home to Melbourne.

The one thing we can’t do often enough when it comes to a goal… Celebrate progress!

Getting your child to sleep might not sound like a big deal, but for any parent who’s been there done that the big deal nature of it might relate.

Not so long ago I was focused on getting a consistent good night’s sleep and as a friend quite rightly pointed out - this could be my greatest challenge yet!

Never give up on your dreams

Never give up on your dreams

I’ve been reminded recently to ‘never give up on your dreams’

And I thought it was such brilliant advice surely someone’s got that quote with their name on it… and they do - Barack Obama!

In the space of a few days I’ve heard such contrasting stories. Stories of some dreams being crushed, and of another’s, having been crushed many times, finally coming to be.

It couldn’t be more challenging or important to have a goal right now

It couldn’t be more challenging or important to have a goal right now

To me, having a goal is almost like breathing

Granted they don’t always need to be big goals, but there is such enormous value in having a goal, of any form.

Goals give us drive, focus and a direction to head in.

And when we’re feeling un-driven, we’ve lost focus, and we don’t feel like we’re going anywhere or getting anywhere… I think a goal can often be the remedy.

Could accountability lessen the chances of you achieving your goal?

Could accountability lessen the chances of you achieving your goal?

I was asked the question recently on a podcast interview as to whether a coach and others on my ‘team’ for certain goals helped me with accountability.

And I said ‘no, not really’. Because those goals we were talking about I owned completely. I didn’t need anyone to hold me to account. I wanted them to help me in other ways with their expertise, but nothing to do with accountability.

When you 'do', you know you 'can'.

When you 'do', you know you 'can'.

This one was inspired by navigating the early days of motherhood - but can apply to anything...

My first 'Little bit of inspiration' blog since my 'Little bundle of inspiration' arrived.

On the weekend we ventured interstate for our first flight adventure for a good friend's wedding. At 7 weeks old, and after a series of challenges on the feeding and sleep deprivation front, as well as choosing to take this path on my own - I was pretty unsure if I could 'do it'. But at the last minute, I chose to try.

Greatness has no time limit.

Greatness has no time limit.

Greatness has no time limit.

This quote isn't mine, but one that continues to inspire me after seeing it at the 35km mark of the London Marathon earlier this year. Completely spent - I let go of chasing a 'time', realising greatness was about so much more...

This time last weekend - the photo above was taken, of Caroline Ashby moments after crossing the line, at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, watching the best of the best push themselves beyond. And it couldn't be a more fitting quote as I reflect on the performances and stories I came across.

Greatness isn't about a time or a place.

There are no wrong doors.

There are no wrong doors.

This blog was inspired by a beautiful friend, Bruce. We caught up a few days ago and had a brilliant chat about 'life'. You know those people who are so humble about life and full of wisdom, they just offer bite chunks of it to you in such a subtle way... Bruce is one of those lovely characters.

I shared with him my new brand I'd planned to launch in the coming days, and of my decision to move on from a brilliant business I’d been working with, to make space to follow my passion and do more of my own thing. Despite having already made these decisions I could still sense an element of doubt and hesitation in my voice.

What kind of ENERGY would you like with that?

What kind of ENERGY would you like with that?

When I contemplated what I might call my business - I was fresh through an Ironman finishing line, and my thing was and still is about 'Being the Difference'. It's at the heart of all I do - it's about helping people realise their potential, being bigger versions of themselves - and the part I hope I am, and can play in that.

But what did 'Be the Difference' mean from a business offering perspective? It didn't quite cut the mustard for a business name, so I pondered some more... The name had to have 'marketing' in there, it's what I'd done for nearly 20 years... (yes I am now that old to quote 20 years ago...!), and it was what I knew, and loved!

Take time.

Take time.

"How are you? - Busy. I'm soooo very busy..." has this conversation played out for you recently? I'm as guilty as anyone, but I'd like to change that and challenge the use of 'busy' and 'no time' from the pallet of words we choose to use...

The truth is we are all busy, doing lots of stuff, and it does often feel like we have 'no time'. We get caught up in the rat race of life, and that my friends isn't going to change... the pace of the world around us is speeding up, not slowing down. We often just bounce from one thing to the next, from one person to the next, one location to the next. The busy-ness of life is an occupational hazard!

Masters of Destiny...

Masters of Destiny...

A recent conversation really got me thinking… (as they often do!). I was mid workout when I started chatting with someone about what we both did on the work front. We had something in common – for a long time we both worked for other businesses, and were now doing our own thing - doing something we loved, on our terms.

“I’m so happy I’m now the master of my own destiny” - he said. And my response was like a knee jerk reaction - “Yes me too”.

Sign up and prove yourself wrong.

As I celebrate 12 months on from pressing the 'launch' button on Marketing Energizers, I reflect on lots of things, but none more so than the one action I took that was by far the most pivotal. The one thing I did that allowed both the preceding actions, and subsequent actions, to be fully realized and all bring me to where I am today, doing what I am doing today.

It's the one we often put off, we shy away from, we avoid at all costs. We take the easy route and look the other way. We stick to the certainty of what we know, instead of the uncertainty that doing this one thing will most likely result in...

The Little Champions.

The Little Champions.

Every day I become more in awe of how much inspiration, strength and spirit we can draw from kids. And for that reason I am dedicating this one to ‘The Little Champions’.

As they grow they’re so focused on trying to fit into our boots, but I believe it’s us big kids, who should strive to fit into theirs. If we measure boot size in spirit and strength - not length, these guys have oodles of it. It should be bottled in those single digit years...
